SIERRA DEL NAYAR

Cultural Adventures in Western Mexico

Listen to a shaman chanting on a moonlit night, dance around the sacred fire, make an offering to the rain gods... This is the ceremonial life of the Cora, one of the most traditional indigenous groups in the Americas. Their home is the Sierra del Nayar, a land of plunging cliffs and mile-deep canyons overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Isolated for centuries in the Sierra, The Cora have preserved much of their precolombian religion and cosmology, and are some of the last keepers of an ancient shamanic heritage.

Just a couple jet-hours south of the border, a journey to the Sierra del Nayar transports you to a fascinating and little-known world, virtually untouched by tourism. Small group travel (maximum 7 persons) allows you to get to know the people personally and experience their culture up close. Your guides will introduce you to the locals and provide detailed information on Cora society, history, and current issues. These active trips include hiking and horseback riding over spectacular landscapes, homestays on family ranches, community religious festivals, and shamanic curing and singing ceremonies. We finish each trip at a beautiful Pacific beach location, where you can relax under a thatched-roof palapa, snorkel, surf, and check out deserted beaches.
